40.4: The Spatial Array

Come learn about spatial audio and ambisonics, and hear demonstrations of the immense capabilities of B2s new immersive sound array. Both 3D sound art and ambisonically encoded field recordings will be used to demo the creative possibilities of this state-of-the-art facility.

Time: Monday, February 28 2022, 9:30am - 11:00am

Location: Black Box Experimental Studio, Roser ATLAS Institute, CU Boulder

40.4: Listen

Lights out. Ears open. Stereo tracks by renowned sonic artists spatialized on the array.

40.4: Applications of Immersive Audio

Join Monica Bolles as she talks about the Immersive Audio Industry and discusses the common approaches for working with Immersive Audio in various practices. She will discuss the different formats, algorithms, and toolsets available, the major industry players that are utilizing these tools, and also show some examples of artists and composers who have been creating at the forefront of spatial audio.

Monica Bolles has been working with spatial audio since 2011 when she first gained access to her local planetariums 15.1 channel surround system. Since then she has been continuously building toolsets in Max MSP to create large textured soundscapes that explore space, movement, and interaction. She is both a technician and an artist. She works to help artists and composers translate their work to spatial environments while at the same time creating and producing her own works that have been exhibited in large scale multichannel speaker arrays ranging in size from 8 to 140 channels. She is currently co-host of the Immersive Audio Podcast and helps to host the Spatial Audio Meetups organized by NOTAM. She is also a presenter of workshops in her field and has performed in this capacity at IRCAM Forums (2020), SXSW (2019) Ableton Loop (2018), IMERSA Summit (2013-2019), and NIME (2017-2018), among others.

40.4: "Sound Fields"

Utilizing the spatial array in ATLAS B2s Experimental Black Box Studio, John Gunther and Sean Winters join forces to present a mostly improvised audiovisual performance using live instruments, live video, digital signal processing, and third order ambisonic diffusion.

John Gunther is a composer and multi-instrumentalist playing Saxophones, Clarinet, and Flute. With a restless musical spirit, he explores all forms of jazz from traditional to avant-garde as well as classical music, world music and experimental electronic music performing on stages throughout the U.S., South America and Europe.
